Colour it Red My Day

The rules for the theme for this months "Color It Red" blog hop, hosted by Carol of Just Let Me Quilt were simple it had to have red in it somewhere.

Mine does but, life happens and I didn't get my project finished. Not all is lost as I do have some photos.

under the ruler toe foot

It's about time I use up some of my stash. I am working on a new pattern and using some pieces from my stash to make it.
The red print was from Kona Bay fabrics which I purchased a yard of in Dec of 2018, Kona Bay Fabrics went out of business in 2017. Moda Basic Grey I purchased 2 yards of in 2017, time both of these were used in a project. For the background I am using Moda Grunge.

straight lines and curves
So far I have been using my ruler toe foot and rulers to do the free motion quilting. I know I will be quilting feathers in the borders when I get to them.

lots of quilting to do yet
Stayed tuned for a finish and pattern release in the next couple weeks.

Sit back enjoy a cuppa tea or if you prefer coffee and see what my other blog hoppers have been making with the colour red.

Squirrels Happen

Have you ever started a project without a plan in mind? It starts out innocently enough. In this case I made an eight pointed star. Simple enough, right? You can read more about my favourite quilt block which are stars here.

two of six drawers of FQ's
I am trying to use some of the FQ's I have. I do have a healthy collection, and they look so nice in all there glorious colours. But they need to be used not just collected.

purple was the choice of the day
Now as tends to happen with a squirrel one gets so involved that the camera is totally forgotten as you make the magic begin to happen. A square here a triangle there and before you know it you are looking at, if the stars have aligned correctly a project you are happy with. Of course there may have been a little oops, nothing mr jack couldn't fix.

a little turning of the blocks and all is fixed
I would like to make it bigger as it is currently only 36'' x 36''. I may be forced to go buy some fabric. I know having to buy fabric, how rough can it get. The current thought is to add a solid purple border to it.

amazing what a few fat quarters can grow up to become

I'm working on writing the pattern for this.

Have you ever made a quilt without a pattern?

I am linking up to Dreami #32 over at mmm! quilts.

Bits of Goings On

A little look at what I've been doing. First up is some fmqing on my newest pattern, to be released in April.

some simple curves and bubbles

Next up is my string project for the 'All about Strings Blog Hop' I'm participating in. My day is Wednesday.

can't show too much, but a few string blocks were a good start to my project come back Wednesday to see what I made

Next up is Sandra of mmmquilts 30 Quilt Design Challenge. Nothing to show for this one yet, I have played in EQ8 so things are percolating just a little slowly.

hop over to Sandra's blog for more info

Once I finish up the new pattern and string project then it's on to the next items. My guilds quilt show is in June, I need to work on my challenge project. Write up the info for my quilts that I'm putting in the show, make a few items for the vendor table.

That should keep me busy for a little bit.

A Sunday Reflection

I recently read a post by Kirsty Cleverly of Bonjour Quilts on the business side of pattern writing. I know some of you will think this is something that doesn't interest you. I found her article well written, not in your face telling why you should buy from a pattern designer but how it effects pattern designers. The behind the scene costs are all outlined for anyone to see.

I have purchased patterns in print and PDF.

a few of the print patterns I have purchased I have a lot more than these
I have even made some, see I don't just collect them. This summer I made myself a new handbag. The farm animal quilt from Sew Fresh Quilts you can read about here.

as you can tell I have been using my handbag

unfortunately I haven't made this one yet.
The above pattern Blue Skies & Sunny Days is from my friend Sandra of mmm!quilts

I have and will continue to support pattern designers even though the list of want to makes keeps getting longer. Oh the life of a quilter we are never done making quilts. There is always another one in line waiting to be made.

I enjoy designing quilt patterns and have free ones and for sale patterns available in my Craftsy store.

a couple of my latest patterns available for sale

Did you read Kirtsy's blog post? I would love to read your comments on this.

Outside Stars a new Pattern

I would like to introduce you to 'Outside Stars' this is my second pattern to be released from this years #30quiltdesignchallenge. It is a paper pieced pattern. I love stars and as you can see this pattern forms two stars. Mr sun was not co-operating at all, two days of cloud and rain doesn't make for ideal photos.
hanging out with my hostas

This is the baby quilt size I started out with the intentions of making a lap size but real life changed my plans. I will be making the lap size as I love the look, can I say that about my own pattern.

The blocks are 15'' on point. I quilted straightish lines around the stars to make them pop.

straight lines to pop the stars
swirls in the red star centers

The gray fabrics are Northcott 'Canvas', the white is Kona, the black solid is also a Northcott. The red is a mottled red by Moda.
I quilted it with my favourite quilting thread Aurifil in the following colours #1103, #2605, #2024 and #2696.

Outside Stars is a paper pieced pattern and includes freezer paper instructions, which is my favourite way to paper piece. It comes in three sizes Baby 42'' by 42'', Lap 62'' by 84'' and Queen 84'' by 106''.

made by Wendy of Pieceful Thoughts of My Quilting Life

Wendy of Pieceful Thoughts of My Quilting Life made this beautiful version of my pattern. Thanks Wendy for testing 'Outside Stars'.

You can purchase a pdf of 'Outside Stars' in my Craftsy store.

'Joy' it's Christmas in July

I now have a pillow for my Christmas decorating, I know shocking right. It took this blog hop to accomplish something I've been meaning to do for the past few years...ugh yes I said years. But it is done and best of  all you can add some 'Joy' to your holidays too as the pattern is free. Thanks to Sarah of Confessions of a Fabric Addict for hosting the '12 Days of Christmas in July' blog hop and giving me the push to finally make a Christmas pillow or maybe it's a wall hanging.

'Joy' wall hanging

The hop runs from July 14th to the 25th. Make sure to visit all the blogs participating the schedule is at the end of this post. Make sure to leave a comment as Sarah is counting them for an extra special giveaway, you can read more about it on her blog Confessions of a Fabric Addict.

The pattern is for the pillow front or a wall hanging if you prefer. Either way have fun and add a little 'Joy' to your Christmas decorating. As you can see in the above photo I used three different greys for the background.

pillow front

Makes an 18'' x 18'' finished pillow front or wall hanging.

Fabric Requirements

Chevrons:
1/4 yard of each a light, light medium and medium grey.

Snowman:
A variety of larger scrap pieces work well.
The snowman can be made from a 10'' square, the letters from (2) 8'' squares.

Cutting for the chevrons/ flying geese:
Traditional Method:
A(light) cut (3) - 5 1/8'' x 5 1/8'' cut diagonally once
B( lt medium) cut (3) - 5 1/8'' x 5 1/8'' cut diagonally once
C(medium) cut (3) - 5 1/8'' x 5 1/8'' cut diagonally once

A(light)  cut (6) - 3 7/8'' x 3 7/8'' cut diagonally once
B( lt. medium)  cut (6) - 3 7/8'' x 3 7/8'' cut diagonally once
C(medium)  cut (6) - 3 7/8'' x 3 7/8'' cut diagonally once

The Snowman Applique pieces are cut using the templates supplied. If you are doing turned edge applique remember to add a 1/4'' to the template pieces before cutting them out. The pieces are reversed and can be downloaded in the PDF on Craftsy

Background:

Use a 1/4'' seam allowance.

Traditional Method
Step 1:

Sew one small triangle (B) to one diagonal edge of the large triangle (A); press toward the small triangle. See diagram 1.

diagram 1
Sew the second small triangle (B) to the other diagonal edge of the large triangle (A) to make a flying-goose unit; press toward the small triangle. See diagram 1.
This makes one 3 1/2'' x 6 1/2'' goose. Make (6) BA units.

Step 2:
Repeat using small triangle (C) and large triangle (B). Make (6) CB units.
Repeat using small triangle (A) and large triangle (C). Make (6) AC units.

Step 3:
Join 3 BA units, see diagram 2. Make 2.

diagram 2

Repeat using 3 CB units. Make 2.
Repeat using 3 AC units. Make 2.

Step 4:
Join as per diagram 3.

diagram 3

This completes the background.

Applique Snowman:

Use your favourite method for applique. Instructions follow for fused machine stitched applique.

Fusible Applique Method:

Step 1:
I like Lite Steam-A-Seam 2 because it leaves less weight in the finished product and it's a double sided fusible. Trace your pattern on the side of the paper where the fusible adheres to the paper more strongly (usually one side of the paper releases more easily than the other - trace on the side that does not release easily).
On the larger pieces, less fusible is needed making the finished center more pliable.
To do this, take your original tracing, and cut from the inside, approx 1/4" inside the traced line. Rough cut beyond the traced line on the outside of the fusible. See diagram 4 as an example of the letter 'J'.

diagram 4

Step 2:
Adhere to fabric as per package directions.
Cut on the traced lines.

Step 3:
Align the pieces using the placement guide. A light box or window help for proper placement.
Press to fuse as per your package instructions.

Step 4:
Machine stitch using your preferred stitch and settings. I like the buttonhole stitch myself.

I quilted a 1/4'' on each side of the chevrons and around all the elements in the snowman.

What Suff I've Been up to Lately

No I haven't forgotten about my blog, just been busy doing other stuff...that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it. Want to see a little of that Stuff?

flying geese a plenty
Well let's see first I've been writing a couple patterns. These flying geese are leftovers from pattern number 1. Sorry that's all you get to see from that one until July 18th, so stayed tuned for it.
The second pattern I'm writing is in the beginning stages, it is one of the designs I made for the 30 Quilt Design Challenge that was hosted by Sandra and Lisa you can read more about it here. Sorry no photos of it just yet.

fabric purchase from sisters

I'm also working on a new guild BOM for the fall. This is the fabric I will be using for it, Sew Sisters had a sale on Victoria day and I took advantage of it. At a little over $7 a metre I'm sure you would too.
Talking of sales Craftsy has its classes on for under $20. I love their classes I can play them when I want and watch as many times as I need.

My guild the Quaker Quilt Guild in Norwich, Ontario is having a quilt show on June 9th(12 - 5 PM) and 10th(10 - 4 PM). It is held at the museum at 89 Stover St., the quilts are displayed in the church on site.
this is one of my entries for the quilt show
I've been busy doing some behind the scenes things for the show.

With all the pattern writing and quilt show prep, I have taken time to smell the flowers.

verbena flowers

This is some of the stuff I've been up to, what stuff have you been up to?
