Sew Not A Square

Challenge 5 of Season 14 Project Quilting hosted by Kim Lapacek was to make anything as long it didn't have any square shapes and could not end up being square.

An idea was born, and I drew up a design in my graphics program. Off to the races to get this finished in time.

triple stitch for vines

I used the 'Crafted Applique' method for the applique shapes. I used Monopoly thread from Superior Threads to stitch the applique shapes down.

all stitched down and quilted, I intentionally left the center unquilted

Now for the intended purpose of this project. I have been going through some of my MIL's stuff, she is in a nursing home. I came across some grandma pins from when my kids gave her when they were little. I have been trying to come up with an idea to display these pins so she could still enjoy them.

no squares at all

I think she will enjoy being able to see these pins, and hopefully will bring back pleasant memories for her.

This project is 6 1/2'' round.

Born to be Wild Almost

Thanks to Carol of Just Let Me Quilt for organizing another wonderful hop. When I first saw the theme for the 'Born to be Wild' blog hop all that kept going through my mind is the song 'Wild Thing you Make my Heart Sing' sung by 'The Troggs' in 1966.  We were to sew something that's jungle-related. Like jungle animals, wild colors or designs, or jungle fabrics. In my defense for going roque, flowers and butterflies are in the jungle. RIGHT? Ahh all is good then, on to my project. Hopefully, Carol forgives me for doing my own thing.

The things that make the heart sing are the things that give you joy and happiness. I love flowers of any type, colour or shape. While my heart was singing I drew.

drawing out a plan

I drew out a design on a piece of freezer paper, it was convenient and big enough to do all on one piece of paper. After that, it was a simple matter to cut out what shapes I wanted to use for the 'Crafted Applique Method' my favourite method by far.

a few fauna and a wild butterfly, yup that fits the guidelines

For the quilting I did some 'Wild FMQ' from Christina Cameli's books. I stitched in the ditch around my applique pieces.

Okay are you ready, I did actually use an animal print for my project. It just happens to be on the back. It required a little bit of piecing to make it the right size.

What makes your heart sing?

My Day of Dusting off a Quilt Book

It's my day too show an old a forgotten quilt book. This blog hop is being hosted by Beaquilter. The idea was to dust off, excuse me while I find the duster it's around here some place. Ahh dust bunnies be gone. Anyway the idea was to make a project from it.

After doing a big clean a few years ago, I thought I had given away my older quilt books. Imagine my surprise at finding a book from 1994. I think I kept it as I liked a couple of the projects in it.

1994 I think I may be dating myself, a hardcover book at that.

A couple new pillows for my living room where on my to do list. What better time to start than now.

this is the project I decided on

I pulled some scraps and got to it. The house is appliqued and for that I used my favourite method, Crafted Applique by Lara Buccella. I used Superior MonoPoly thread and the buttonhole stitch to stitch down the applique. In no time at all I had the pillow top done.

please excuse the dull colours due to lack of sunshine

I quilted it simply with some big loops in the background and swirls in the borders to keep it soft. I used my favourite batting Hobb's Premium 80/20.

ahh finally some sun to brighten things up

For the pillow back I used Winter Elegance from in The Beginning Fabrics that I picked up from Stitch-It Central. I like zipped backs for my pillows. I am not going to do a tutorial as there are a lot of good ones on the internet. You can find a tutorial here.

zippered back

For the binding I used the backing fabric cut at 2'' instead of my usual 2 1/4''.

An older book can have patterns that are still relevant today made with more up to date fabrics and even methods. I think my pillow adds a little charm to the place.
Take a look through your own collection. You never know what might inspire you.

To see pillow number 2 come back on March 12th for the 'Text-it' Blog Hop.
