Creativity and Hope

Creativity, the process of making something new. Hope, a feeling of expectation and a desire for certain things to happen.
I hope that we will return to normal or a near normal life.
Usually I'm busy preparing to have my family together for Easter. With 'Stay at Home' orders we will connect via phone calls or messaging. It will be different but necessary to help stop the spread. My oldest grandson Tyler sends random messages, they help to brighten my day. What I miss most are the little things like walking into a store to pick up one or two things and not feeling paranoid while doing it. The big thing I miss most are grandkid hugs!

I just wanted, no needed to play with fabric, colour, thread in other words be creative. An idea came from a quote I read on the internet it is from Emily Dickinson:
“Hope” is the thing with feathers -
That perches in the soul -
And sings the tune without the words -
And never stops - at all -

Usually I start a new project in EQ, this time I played in my graphics program. At first I was just going to do a small trapunto whole cloth with the word hope, but I wasn't really feeling it. The feather kept tickling me. Then it hit me why not use a feather, thankfully not very hard. How?
The ideas flowed after that. But how was I going to add that feather, with thread of course after all the original idea of a whole cloth was still there. I had never done a whole cloth before. There's a first time for everything and I was going to jump in feet first.
tracing the lettering and feather using my lightbox

I printed out the layout I came up with, it took four pages, then I taped those pages together. I used a blue wash out marker to trace it onto a piece of Kona Cotton.
stitched with washout thread

I placed a piece of polyester batting for loftiness of the trapunto, and before you ask why I didn't use wool I have a wool allergy. I stitched the outline of the words and feather with wash away thread, then cut away the rest of the batting.
I layered the backing, Hobbs 80/20 batting, another piece of poly batting and the top.
backing, Hobbs batting, poly batting and top

Next up thread decisions, I auditioned Aurifil threads.
Aurifil thread selection

I was a little worried about stitching the feather and making a total mess of it. So I started with stitching Aurifil 2024 around all the lettering and the spine of the feather first. I thought micro stitching around the letters would make them pop, it does. BUT it is slow going and I figured after half an hour in I must have been off my rocker to be doing it. It was slow going but I do like the look of it.

That feather was taunting me and I thought it's now or never. For the feather I laid down a base using 2024 followed by 2311. I'm sorry I didn't take any step by step photos, I was too into the feather to even think about photos. I used 2304 and 2902 both 40 wt next.
I like how the feather turned out

Instead of a traditional binding I did a faced binding. This is the tutorial I used. I hand sewed the sides and the bottom corners but left the top corners unsewn, I am using them as hanging pockets.

the back
I am happy with this my first whole cloth project.
no sun this morning

Would I do another whole cloth? I think so? Did it help fill my need for creativity? Yes!

I hope you are remaining positive and finding joy in the simple pleasures... maybe it's the smell of fresh bread, a phone call or message from a loved one or friend or maybe a sunny day.

Give it Away Challenge

Time for number 5 of  Project Quilting hosted by Kim of Persimon Dreams.
Kim thinks that 'quilters are a generous lot' and that we give from the heart without thinking of financial reward when we give.
The purpose for this challenge is simple 'Give it Away'. Whether to another person an organization or charity. I knew instantly who was going to be the recipent of my project.

If you read my post from Put a Heart on it  you know I had a friend who was in hospice. She has since passed away I am also friends with her older sister, we are both quilters and have a love of flowers. An idea for what what I was going to make blossomed.

printed on EQ printables
I played around in my graphics program with the fonts to get an arrangement of lettering I liked. Each line is a different font. I printed it using EQ printable fabric, I have used it in the past with good results. I stitched a cotton print to make it large enough to add the flowers, as the EQ fabric is stiffer until washed. Plus I wasn't sure how fusing the flowers to it would work.

For the flowers I used Steam-A-Seam 2 lite and cut out a variety of floral fabrics to get a pleasing arrangement. I love my Karen Kay Buckley scissors when doing fine detail cutting.

I tried tea dying the EQ printable side but it didn't work the way I wanted.
I then used Superior's Mono-Poly invisible thread and the buttonhole stitch to stitch the flowers on after fusing them. My friends favourite colour is blue. I did a little bit of thread sketching on the flowers.

a selection of threads I used for thread sketching and fmqing
I free motion quilted the floral side with bubbles and swirls. I echoed around the wording.
I do like art quilting and enjoyed making this one. I hope my friend likes it to.

Birds in the Air x 4

Project Quilting 11.4 challenge is to use the 'Birds in the Air' block.  It’s two sizes of triangles, combined for a square block you must either use or reinterpret this traditional block. I did indeed reinterpret the block and it meets the requirements of two sizes of triangles. I used four blocks in my table topper.

I was short on time and only started making the topper yesterday at 9:30 AM. I just finished binding it this morning. I don't think I have ever made anything this fast before. Not bad considering I wasn't sure what to make.

An inkling of an idea started when I took a look through my collection of HSTs they do come in handy, and this was one of those times.

An Hst with side triangles, love those batiks
I started with a 3 1/2'' HST added triangles from a 3 7/8'' cut in half diagonally on each side.

all lined up to cut off those dog ears

I do like to trim off the dog ears and just line up the 45 degree line along the seam line and trim those dog ears off. This works for any size hst and triangle, at the moment I'm at a loss as to what you call this piece. Any suggestions?

Add a triangle a 6 7/8'' square cut in half diagonally to above unit. I went a step further to add interest I added a square to the bottom of the larger triangle sewing diagonally across the square. Trim and press.

I used my creative license to adapt the Birds in the Air block

A couple layouts with and without my adaption.

option #1. Not feeling it. This was before I added the bottom triangle

option #2 has promise but still not quite there yet

auditioning thread on option #3

Now this was more to my liking.
table topper finished size 19'' square
For the quilting I needed something fast and easy. I quilted feathers in the batik coral pieces and some curves in the print batik triangles. In the sashing and borders some vines with leaves and swirls.

a closeup of the quilting
I'm ready for spring with a new springy table topper. It was a quick project but I enjoyed it once I figured out what I was going to make.

Team Colours 11.2

It's week two in Project Quilting at Persimon Dreams 11.2 Team Colours. I didn't do the first challenge which was numbers, none of ideas I had were working. However when I saw the second one I knew I would be doing something with my favourite teams colours. I am a Toronto Blue Jays fan and have been from day one, April 7, 1977.

Bring on the blues and white, their uniforms are white, and blue ( from powder blue to a dark blue ).

assorted colour strips in various widths stitched in a fan shape

After sewing the strips together I trimmed the wide end using a dinner plate, worked great. Okay I have a fan, not so sure about this bright idea after all.

trimmed but now what
It definitely wasn't done yet, it needed something but what? As the Blue Jays logo is copyrighted I couldn't use that. Then it hit me the Blue Jays are Canada's only MLB baseball team. Let's make it reflect that. Their fan base is also Canadian.

I cut out a Canadian maple leaf using leftover fabric from Canada's 150th birthday in 2017. My grandson thought I needed a baseball, so I added one of those. I appliqued both the leaf and the ball. Some simple loops for quilting. The binding is a single fold binding.

ball diamond or fan base or maybe both
Opening day is 3/26 I can't wait to see how our young guys and new players do this season. Go Jays Go!!

Are you a sports fan?

Guild BOM 2019

It's one of my favourite seasons 'guild season'. My guild had there first meeting of the year on Monday Sept 9th. I look forward to catching up with fellow members and seeing what they've made over the summer.
It is also the time I introduce the new BOM for the year, this is the fifth year I have designed the BOM. My guild is more traditional than modern and as such more members join in making the BOM if it is a more traditional setting.

2019-20 BOM
This years quilt I made in my favourite colour...green. I picked up the greens from Caroline Quilts when she was a vendor at our quilt show in June. They are mostly Northcotts you can read about them here.

A few closeups of some of the blocks and the quilting.

 some feathers in this block
straight lines and curves

swirls and  a loop with echoing out

I tried not to overthink my quilting and just had fun
The following are the previous BOM's I have designed for my guild.

2015 the first design was a medallion style quilt my oldest son has this one
2015 my first BOM design for my guild, read more about it here.

2016 in preparation of Canada's 150th birthday, applique
2016 was a wall hanging with applique, you can read more about it here.

2017 on point with Irish chain alternate blocks
2017 saw a more traditional style set on point, you can read more here.

2018 saw more of a modern setting
2018 I designed more of a modern setting, you can read more about it here.

Diamonds are The Best

Welcome to my day to participate in the Be a Diamond Blog Hop, hosted by Carol at Just Let Me Quilt. The goal in this hop was to create a "diamond" project.

Diamonds are a girl's best friend, as my birthstone is diamond I totally agree with that statement. Whether diamonds are a member of the precious stone family, a song or made from fabric they are the best IMHO. My project may not officially be a "diamond",  however the squares on point do give the impression of diamonds.

a fun novelty print
I used an animal print that I had in my stash and thought it would make a lovely baby quilt. I paired it with Kona white, a fat quarter of green that I have no idea who makes it and a solid by Micheal Miller. The pattern is one that I designed and haven't written up yet. It's on my lengthy to do list.

I quilted some feathers and swirls in the background
For the quilting I did some dot to dot in the diamonds and curves in the triangles and on the print. I love feathers and quilted some free flowing feathers in the background.

a fun tetris print for the backing and square in a square corners.
The sun cooperated fully for the quilts photo shoot. I sure am happy to see more of the sun, winter was way too long.

soon those tree branches that are shadows on the quilt will be full of leaves
The quilt is 42'' by 42''. It is the second quilt for H2H2019.

Take a little time to visit the rest of those participating in today's lineup.

More Bits of Goings On

It's amazing how fast April seemed to come along this year. The months just continue to roll on, if I'm not careful I may get rolled right over.
April started out busy as the 1st is my anniversary, no sewing got done. We spent the day just doing little fun things that we enjoy, like a walk. Then a nice meal out at one of our favourite restaurants.

Sewing has been happening including more secret sewing this time for the 'Be A Diamond' blog hop hosted by Just Let Me Quilt.

A sneak peak at my project.

a fun novelty print
This is as far as I am, I need to get moving on this project as my day is April 26th.

Some easy sewing also happened I saw these cute little bunny bags on pinterest. The tutorial is here. They were a quick make. My grandchildren will like these, especially filled with chocolates.

I made six in a couple hours

I have also been slowly working on my challenge project for my guild show. I have been using Steam a Seam 2 Lite on the back of the flowers and cutting them out. I need a whole lot more.

I need to continue cutting more as this is only a small sample of what I'm going to be using

Now I just hope my idea for the guild challenge works out the way I have in my mind. That's the funny thing about these visions they don't always go the way we think they will. But I'm pushing forward as I'm sure it's going to look like I envision, fingers and toes crossed.

If you are looking for a great QAL hop on over to mmm!quilts. She has a lovely design, that makes 42 1/2'' square quilt a very manageable size and time schedule. I am sponsoring one of the prizes.

Now I better get busy and start putting thread to fabric.

Text It! Blog Hop

Welcome to my stop on the Text It! blog hop, sharing the gorgeous and fun projects from Sherri Noel's (Rebecca Mae Designs) new book, Text It!
Sherri's book has 10 Quilt and Pillow patterns as well as 7 full sized alphabets so you can personalize any project or make something of your own inspired by the book.

I was looking for a quick project as I have a lot going on, as I browsed through her book I found the perfect project. It goes well with my project from 'Dusting off a Quilt Book' .

I used some of the same scraps as my dusted off pillow.

The pillow top came together quickly. I prefer not to have the thread steal the show when appliqueing so I machine appliqued the letters using Superior's Monopoly and Bottom Line thread. All in all I am very happy with how my pillow turned out. I found the instructions easy to follow and Sherri offers some great tips in the book.

I quilted some simple swirls and echoed around the lettering.

I have a giveaway you can enter, with two prizes. One is a copy of Text It!, which is only available to a winner who lives in Canada. I will be sending it out to the winner. The other prize, 2 large spools of Aurifil thread, will be shipped anywhere in the world. To enter, leave me a comment telling me do you bind your pillows? Also please include whether you are Canadian. I will draw the winner on March 16th.

If you would like a copy signed by Sherri she has some listed in her shop HERE.

My Day of Dusting off a Quilt Book

It's my day too show an old a forgotten quilt book. This blog hop is being hosted by Beaquilter. The idea was to dust off, excuse me while I find the duster it's around here some place. Ahh dust bunnies be gone. Anyway the idea was to make a project from it.

After doing a big clean a few years ago, I thought I had given away my older quilt books. Imagine my surprise at finding a book from 1994. I think I kept it as I liked a couple of the projects in it.

1994 I think I may be dating myself, a hardcover book at that.

A couple new pillows for my living room where on my to do list. What better time to start than now.

this is the project I decided on

I pulled some scraps and got to it. The house is appliqued and for that I used my favourite method, Crafted Applique by Lara Buccella. I used Superior MonoPoly thread and the buttonhole stitch to stitch down the applique. In no time at all I had the pillow top done.

please excuse the dull colours due to lack of sunshine

I quilted it simply with some big loops in the background and swirls in the borders to keep it soft. I used my favourite batting Hobb's Premium 80/20.

ahh finally some sun to brighten things up

For the pillow back I used Winter Elegance from in The Beginning Fabrics that I picked up from Stitch-It Central. I like zipped backs for my pillows. I am not going to do a tutorial as there are a lot of good ones on the internet. You can find a tutorial here.

zippered back

For the binding I used the backing fabric cut at 2'' instead of my usual 2 1/4''.

An older book can have patterns that are still relevant today made with more up to date fabrics and even methods. I think my pillow adds a little charm to the place.
Take a look through your own collection. You never know what might inspire you.

To see pillow number 2 come back on March 12th for the 'Text-it' Blog Hop.
