Twisted Path is in Make Modern

Wow, I didn't realize it was so long since my last post. I've been doing this that and nothing at all. I did do some secret sewing and today I get to show you one of those secret sewing quilts.

I am pleased to introduce you to Twisted Path, which is in the current issue #43 of Make Modern Magazine.

The inspiration behind this design was Covid and how our lives have twisted together at times and apart at others. My hope is that we can get Covid under control and return to the times of togetherness. I FMQed some feathers and swirls in the negative space. Some vines and leaves in the tans and browns The quilting was all done on my domestic machine.

A closer shot of the quilting

Here is a summary of what is available in Issue 43 which begins with the Editor telling an age-old tale of coffee, blue jeans, and too many WIPs - the overwhelm of which is paralyzing her desire to quilt. Jane shares a recent epiphany that has resulted in her tackling some of her oldest unfinished projects, and she shares tips to help us whip our own WIP list into shape ready for the new year.

Issue 43 is a fabulous collection of modern quilt patterns and projects to fill your creative cup – we MAKE quick quilts and cushions which would make great gifts, a modern applique quilt, a postage stamp quilt, and something a little trickier for those of us who like a challenge. There’s also a handy project travel bag to hold your quilt blocks flat and notions to quilt on the go. We MEET makers Troy Murrah who makes quilts from wood, Sharon Burgess from Lilabelle Lane, and Annie Hudnut. Our regular columnists discuss making plans, fabric substrates, HSTs, and we chat with Jess Zeigler of The Longarm League. We focus on Sewing Room Ergonomics and how you can make quilting less of a pain in the neck! And we MOTIVATE you to try fussy cutting with tips from Ange Wilson and a whole gallery of fussy cut inspiration.

Orange you Glad Blog Hop

Hosted by Carla from Creatin' in the Sticks. This blog hop challenge was to "Create something inspired by the color orange''.
I am proud to be a Canadian, however, we have a nasty history with indigenous peoples. If you would like to read more about the 'Truth and Reconciliation Report of Canada go to Sandra of mmmQuilts blog as she has been explaining the report. The project she has been making inspired me for my blog hop project. Sandra has been making flying geese and some hearts.

fabric pull the oranges are 6 inch strips

I liked what she was doing and I knew what I wanted to make. My heart goes out to the indigenous people and what they have been through, so I knew hearts were going to be in my design. The flying geese in red I was using as a symbol of Canada.

hearts and geese

I paper pieced the hearts using 6 different oranges.

'A New Direction' hanging out in the garden

Some simple crosshatch quilting, I did a one-inch grid. In the orange border some swirls.

The backing is a piece leftover from my Garden of Scrap quilt, it is from Connecting threads. I had picked up a few different backings when they were on sale.

If you would like to make your own table runner, the pattern is on sale in my Etsy shop till the end of the month.

Inventory Quilt Project

Have you heard of the Inventory Quilt Project being hosted by Just Wanna Quilt? The idea is to use one piece of each fabric in your stash to make a quilt to show your stash all in one quilt. You can use fabrics in one colour, for example or maybe the more the merrier version. I'm the more the merrier kind a gal with my project.

I am one of the featured designers and my turn to showcase my project and pattern is today March 4th.

The pattern I'm using is called 'Flipping Out'. I know strange name right. Here's how it came about I was in a stare down competition with my bonus HSTs and wondering what in the world was I going to do with all of them. Well I can tell you I didn't win the stare down as they seemed to multiply right before my very eyes. I was ready to flip out. Enough already I needed to deal with them and NOW. And that is how a new pattern began.

I have a substantial amount of green and also pink. 5 granddaughters account for all the pink.
If you want to use Flipping Out for your inventory quilt, pick up the PDF pattern in my Etsy store. It is on the introductory sale price of $8 CDN. Pick it up today and join me as I continue to work on mine.
Thank you to Robin Sue for testing this pattern and the editing.
Flipping out uses FQ's or scraps or yardage

If you want to take part in the Inventory Quilt project sew along, there's a Facebook group you can join and you can also use the hashtag #inventoryquilt on Instgram.

Will you be sewing along? If so, will you use every single fabric in your stash, or every fabric in a single colour, or some other variation?

And just for fun let's have a giveaway of one of my patterns for all those who participate using 'Flipping Out'.

Now to get back to playing with my stash let the fun begin!

Colour it Red My Day

The rules for the theme for this months "Color It Red" blog hop, hosted by Carol of Just Let Me Quilt were simple it had to have red in it somewhere.

Mine does but, life happens and I didn't get my project finished. Not all is lost as I do have some photos.

under the ruler toe foot

It's about time I use up some of my stash. I am working on a new pattern and using some pieces from my stash to make it.
The red print was from Kona Bay fabrics which I purchased a yard of in Dec of 2018, Kona Bay Fabrics went out of business in 2017. Moda Basic Grey I purchased 2 yards of in 2017, time both of these were used in a project. For the background I am using Moda Grunge.

straight lines and curves
So far I have been using my ruler toe foot and rulers to do the free motion quilting. I know I will be quilting feathers in the borders when I get to them.

lots of quilting to do yet
Stayed tuned for a finish and pattern release in the next couple weeks.

Sit back enjoy a cuppa tea or if you prefer coffee and see what my other blog hoppers have been making with the colour red.

Hearted Beauties Release

I have always wanted to make a New York Beauty Quilt. Whenever I spy one whether it's at a quilt show or on the net, they catch my eye.

'Hearted Beauties' is what happened after I played with designing my own New York Beauty blocks in a heart shape. Why a heart shape? Because I thought it might be neat to see what they looked like. Of course those hearts needed a setting and a quilt pattern was born.

Hearted Beauties

The Heart blocks are paper pieced, the rest of the quilt uses traditional piecing.

The quilt back shows how I quilted it. I quilted this with all Aurifil threads. It's a good thing I have a nice stash of them.
Those large open spaces left plenty of room for some custom quilting. You can do as much or as little as you want.

A big thanks goes out to my testers.  Wendy of  Pieceful Thoughts of My Quilting Life, you can find her on @piecefulwendy and Lauren who posts on IG @letospassion.

Wendy's version

Lauren's version I like how she has turned the hearts so they point into the centre

You can purchase a copy from my Etsy shop. Hearted Beauties is on sale for the rest of April.

Bits of Goings On

A little look at what I've been doing. First up is some fmqing on my newest pattern, to be released in April.

some simple curves and bubbles

Next up is my string project for the 'All about Strings Blog Hop' I'm participating in. My day is Wednesday.

can't show too much, but a few string blocks were a good start to my project come back Wednesday to see what I made

Next up is Sandra of mmmquilts 30 Quilt Design Challenge. Nothing to show for this one yet, I have played in EQ8 so things are percolating just a little slowly.

hop over to Sandra's blog for more info

Once I finish up the new pattern and string project then it's on to the next items. My guilds quilt show is in June, I need to work on my challenge project. Write up the info for my quilts that I'm putting in the show, make a few items for the vendor table.

That should keep me busy for a little bit.

Squared Off Winner

Thank you to everyone who left a comment on the release of Squared Off. I used the random number generator. And the winner is KaHolly.

She has been notified and a copy of Squared Off has been sent to her.

Squared Off
If you would like to have your own copy, it is available in my Craftsy Store. This is no longer available since Craftsy deleted all but two of my patterns. I will update the pattern and add it to my Etsy store.

test blocks of Squared Off

While writing the pattern I made a test block. Then added a few more using some of  my overflowing scraps. I think I'll add a narrow white border, do some free motion quilting and call it a mini.
