Having Fun with Bonus HST's

I decided it was time to clean up some of my bonus/ leftover HST's. I pressed and trimmed  forever, at least that's what it felt like.

HST Trimmings
There were quite a few of them, as I just toss them all in a small container. When it gets full it's time to deal with them. That time was now.

1 1/.2 inch HST's

These HST's trimmed up at 1 1/2 inches. There were 108 of them, evenly split between the blacks and the reds. I started playing with them and one thing led to another, next thing I knew I had this cute mini. Just taking time to play can be so much fun.

Minis

It uses 96 of those HST's up, and measures approx 9 x 13. My seam ripper decided it wanted to play too and got into the act on several occasions. Someone might have sewn a couple of the arrows in the wrong direction. Oh well all's good now.
I'm not sure whether to add a border or  just quilt and bind it the way it is.

Do you trim up your bonus HST's or are you like me and wait till they pile up?

  1. If I am making something that yeilds a lot of bonus HSTs, I tend to go ahead and trim them up as I go. If I only get a couple, they get pushed aside. It doesn't make sense on inspection, but it's what I do. :) I really like how your mini turned out. On whether or not to add a border, I would ask what you plan to do with it. If it is going to be a mini that you can gift or hand up, I'd say leave it as is, but if you want to make it a pillow front, then making it a size for a form would make sense... way to use up some scraps! Speaking of which, do you know about the Oh Scrap! linkup each Sunday @Quilting is more fun than housework?

  2. With or without boarders, it would make a very cute wall hanging. I do save my extra HST's but so far I haven't done anything with them. Maybe I need to get them out and start playing. Taking your HST's stash from 108 down to 12...I'm clapping. That's quite impressive.

  4. Your little mini is the perfect idea for those pesky leftovers! If I have extras, they will be saved for future use and then trimmed as needed!

  6. Oh that turned out so cute! I have a baggie of a bunch of them, some I incorporate into the back of a quilt, and a couple of times I've made something new, like you did here. I agree; it is SO much fun just to freely play with the shapes.

  7. I always just set my bonus HSTs aside. That way I can trim them up to the size I need when I settle on a project. Thanks for sharing with Oh Scrap!

  12. Great job! I tend to leave mine in a big zip-lock baggie from each project they are from, then trim up if I come up with a use for later :)

  14. Your resulting mini is fantastic! I currently have 200 'bonus' HSTs from my recent finish. I definitely square up HSTs before sewing - makes for fewer dates with the seam ripper! Mine are going to go onto a shelf to taunt me for awhile :)

I love comments, however if you don't get a reply back from me it is because you may be a no-reply blogger. Hope you have a great day!
