Project Quilting 13.5

 Challenge 13.5 we were to play with repetition and the creation of rhythm. Something had to be intentionally repeated three times or more.  Project Quilting is hosted by Kim Lapacek of Persimon Dreams.

When coming up with an idea for this week's challenge I as I'm sure most of the world has been doing watched the travesty that Russia is doing to Ukraine. My heart is with all Ukrainians. So it's no wonder that this week's project has at the very least hearts.

This is where I was in my project on Friday

I couldn't work on my PQ project as I had a deadline for a secret project, it had to be finished first. I finally had time on Friday to design and start making my creation. Hearts check. With a deadline of Sunday, I knew I had to get cracking on my PQ project. No time for progress photos.

This 21'' x 21'' table topper or wall hanging I put hanging corners on the back, is made in the colours of Ukraine's flag. I fmqed feathers in all the hearts using a light yellow Aurifil #2105, the blue is #2770 and the white is #2021.

I used Hobbs Thermore batting my favourite batting for table toppers and wall hangings.

Project Quilting 12.6 Ab Intra

 Up until this morning, I was not going to do this challenge. This week's challenge is Ab Intra, or "from within." At first glance, I think the theme is a little intimidating and I have too many raw emotions to contemplate putting them into this. 

But, you know there is always a but somewhere. While having a coffee this morning I thought of this challenge and how we as quilters give freely and put our heart into all we do. We are all stars! 

 So the challenge started at 7:27 AM, nothing like the last minute to do this.

Not much time for anything else, it was put the head done and sew.

Keeping the pedal to the metal, well maybe not metal. But I was going full out.

11:45 AM

I can't believe I made it. Simple straight line quilting echoing the shapes. This little piece finishes at 7'' by 7''. Need to go small when there is no time to spare.

And so I have 6 for 6 done! 

Shattered Heart

 In Ontario, where I live, we are in a lockdown situation to try to curb the numbers of Covid cases. Ontario Declares Second Provincial Emergency to Address COVID-19 Crisis and Save Lives. These lockdowns are hard for a person living alone. I have been trying to do more walking to keep myself active. I have also been slowly getting back into quilting. The blog hops I have been in recently have helped, I think my mojo may be returning.

Now let's get to the 'Hearts on Fire' blog hop, hosted by Carol of Just Let me Quilt. The rules were simple to make a heart project, only the heart can't be red. 

I ran a few different ideas through my mind but kept coming back to the same one. What else was I to do but go with it, I started with a quick sketch of an idea.

Now that I had an idea I needed a plan on how to make it. Improv came to mind, although not my favourite method. But what the heck I might as well go right out of my comfort zone while I'm at it. 

I pulled out some Island Batiks that I won from Sandra of MMMQuilts. 

My hubby's favourite colour was blue and mine is green and those batiks were perfect for what I had in mind. 

I started to cut a few strips of the background and the coloured pieces and stitched them together. I was all in if it worked so much the better if not maybe I could paper piece it.

As I stitched the pieces together I added a background piece to each side.

I kept thinking I hope this works and looks okay.

 A narrow 1/2 inch inner border and an outer 2-inch border. For the quilting, I kept it simple and just echoed the heart shape. 

After all that worrying about whether I was going to like it or not...I do.

Put a Heart on it Project Quilting 11.3

Put a heart on it, challenge three. I can't believe how fast this one came together. I started at 9:30 AM and by noon I had a finished project. I do have to confess that some of the hearts were already cut out, they were left overs from when I made 'Pinky' for my granddaughter. One of the applique methods in my tool box is Crafted Applique'. I keep extra pieces between sheets of wax paper and just pull them out when I need them.

The inspiration for this piece hit me after visiting a friend who is in hospice. The smaller hearts that float around the centre heart represent those that have passed through my life, with the centre heart representing me. Parents, siblings, grandparents and friends. I tried to think of pleasant times and not just the sad.
Working on this had me thinking of my paternal grandmother who I was close with and enjoyed spending time with. She was from Finland and I miss her accent, she did speak excellent English but some words just had her special way of saying them. She also made the best cinnamon buns which I continue to make her recipe to this day as does my daughter.

I wasn't sure at first how I was going to quilt this except for the feathers on the bottom of the heart. I wanted the feathers to show and decided a stipple would help them pop a little bit.
